MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada district administration is planning to station lifeguards at the Tannirbavi beach, where three youngsters drowned after they went to swim on Thursday. According to the statistics maintained by Mangalore City Police, as many as 14 unnatural deaths were reported from the Tannirbavi beach since 2008. Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda said drowning of the three youngsters has shown the need of having a permanent arrangement of lifeguards at the beach, which is slated for development under a public-private partnership. “The technical bid for this project has been completed and the financial bid will be opened next week. The firm, which will be selected, will be first asked to recruit two lifeguards,” Mr. Gowda said. The lifeguards will be in addition to Coast Guards and Coastal Security Police, who are patrolling the Coastline, he added. Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said the police would place more boards to caution people against swimming off the Tannirbavi beach. “We have already placed some boards. Some more will be erected, especially at the place where people park their vehicles,” he said. Mr. Singh said he was discussing with other agencies about having fishermen as life guards. Such an arrangement has been made at the Ullal and Someshwar beaches. “This will help in keeping a round-the-clock vigil along the coast,” he said.
