Investigators suspect poverty coupled with family problems led to the murders

CHENNAI: An unemployed man allegedly killed his wife and two children at Vyasarpadi here. He was caught a few hours later at Tirupati with the assistance of the Andhra Pradesh police.

Investigators suspect that poverty coupled with family problems led to the murders.

According to police sources, the murders came to light early on Saturday after the locked house at A. Kalyanapuram was broke open. Yogesh lived with his wife Rukmani (26), son Yuvaraj (3) and seven-month-old daughter Deepa. He left home around 9 a.m. on Friday after taking blessings from his father who lives in the same area. On Saturday, he called his brother-in-law Prakash (30) to say he had killed his family members.

When Prakash went to check, Rukmani was found dead with a stab injury and strangulation marks on her neck, while Yuvaraj and Deepa were hanging from the ceiling.

The accused had used a telephone cable to hang the children.

The bodies were shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for post-mortem. In a note purportedly written by Yogesh, he claimed that his wife often quarrelled with him over petty issues, the sources said.

“Yogesh had no source of income and was depending on his in-laws for money. This probably led to quarrels between the couple and the relatives claimed that they were involved in a scuffle recently. He married Rukmani, who belongs to a different community, four years ago. A team went to Tirupati based on specific information and arrested Yogesh with the help of local police. He had a strong suicidal tendency at the time of his arrest,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Pulianthope) Ashwin Kotnis said.

Forensic experts and sniffer dogs inspected the scene of crime. Joint Commissioner of Police (North) N.K. Senthamarai Kannan said the exact cause of death of the victims would be known in the post-mortem report.

“We are investigating the circumstances that led to the gruesome murders. The accused might have attacked his family either on Thursday night or early on Friday,” Mr. Kannan said.

A probe by a Revenue Divisional Officer has been ordered into the incident, the sources added.
