Livelihood of 38,000 people will be affected: association

Union submits memorandum at Deputy Commissioner's office

‘Minister had promised honorarium of Rs. 1,000 would be fixed but has failed to keep his word'

DEMANDING REDRESSAL:Members of the Karnataka State United ASHA Workers' Association staging a protest in Chitradurga on Saturday.

Chitradurga: The Karnataka State United ASHA Workers' Association on Saturday staged a protest here against the Government's move to reduce the incentives being paid to health assistants.

In a memorandum submitted at the Deputy Commissioner's office here, the association criticised the Government for reducing the incentives of the assistants, who were involved in various schemes, including the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).

Credit

The credit for the success of the National Rural Health Mission should be given to health assistants because they were working for its effective implementation, the memorandum said.

The Government had reduced the incentive for handling delivery cases from Rs. 200 to Rs. 100. The incentive for preparing reports on the death of a mother or child at the time of delivery had been cut to Rs. 50 from Rs. 500. Besides reducing the incentives, health assistants had been removed from the Pulse Polio programme, the memorandum said.

Promise

Earlier, Health Minister B. Sriramulu had promised that a monthly honorarium of Rs. 1,000 would be fixed for health assistants and their incentives increased. Criticising the Minister for not keeping his word, the association said that instead of fulfilling their demands, the Government had reduced their incentives.

Demand

Stating that the Government's decision would affect the livelihood of nearly 38,000 health assistants across the State, the association members urged the Government to withdraw its order reducing incentives and take immediate measures to fulfil the promises made by it earlier.
