jostle for shelter:P.Kumar, MP, second from left, and N.R.Sivapathi, third from left, Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, interacting with families whose huts were gutted at Ambedkar Nagar in the city on Saturday. TIRUCHI: Families whose huts were gutted at Ambedkar Nagar in the city on Thursday have demanded that they be issued house site pattas at the site. Appeal Expressing suspicions that the fire was a deliberate act by some, the residents appealed to N.R.Sivapathi, Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, P.Kumar, MP, and R.Manoharan, MLA, who called on them on Saturday, to take stern action against the culprits. The elected representatives visited the site of the fire accident to console the families and to distribute a relief of Rs.2,000 each (Rs.1000 contributed by Mr.Sivapathi and Rs.500 each by Mr.Kumar and Mr.Manoharan). The families gathered around them to express their demands. Demonstration staged Later in the day, members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a demonstration near the Railway Junction demanding action against “rowdy elements” who allegedly threatened the families to vacate the place and issue of pattas to the affected families. S.Sridhar, district secretary, and K.Annadurai, City Secretary, CPI (M) were among those who participated in the agitation.
