Kochi: Women's organisations on Saturday decried attempts being made to tarnish the reputation of Thasni Banu, an IT professional, who was recently attacked near a shop at Kakkanad, 2 km from CSEZ (and not as reported in these columns on June 22 ) by launching false propaganda against her through Internet and other media. At a press conference, Nandini and T.S. Ashadevi, convener and secretary respectively of Sthree Kuttaiyma and Pennarangu condemned the attack and urged Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to take steps to end the constant attacks on women and the practice of questioning individual freedom of women. Ms Thasni Banu, who also addressed the reporters, said that the response of the police to the incident had been positive. She had never complained against any police officers. The assistant sub-inspector of police was placed under suspension following the intervention of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. In fact, the police could have suo motu initiated proceedings instead of waiting for her complaint. She was also pained at the character assassination being launched against her.
