Shimoga: Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University (KU) S.A. Bari said on Saturday that the year-long silver jubilee celebrations of the university will commence on June 29. He was speaking at the academic council meeting of the university held on the Jnana Sahyadri campus in Shankaraghatta on Saturday. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will inaugurate the celebrations at 11 a.m. Minister for Higher Education V.S. Acharya and Chairperson of State Legislative Council D.H. Shankaramurthy are expected to take part in the inaugural function. Prof. Bari said the university had planned to construct a separate block for humanities and language departments to commemorate the silver jubilee. The meeting also gave approval for the common regulations governing the degree of Doctor of Philosophy programmes (Ph.D.) of Karnataka State Universities, framed under the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000. Commenting on the mode of entrance test to be conducted for admission to Ph.D. programmes according to the new regulation, Dean of Student Welfare S.A. Javed said that it was not possible to assess the analytical and language skills of the candidates through objective type questions. He favoured inclusion of descriptive questions in the entrance test. A few members, who endorsed the view, said that students should be asked to write a research proposal during the entrance test. Registrar of Evaluation Rame Gowda and council member Shivakumaraswamy said that chances of nepotism were high in awarding marks for descriptive answers. Dr. Rame Gowda said that OMR sheets could be used in the entrance test to ensure transparency in evaluation. Prof. Bari said that the objective type questions would be introduced with the intention to eliminate human element in the evaluation process. Also, the purpose of listing meritorious students for the Ph.D. programmes would be served with the entrance test based on objective type questions, he said. Mahendrakar, professor, and N.B. Tulujappa, professor, expressed displeasure against introduction of uniform calendar of events for undergraduate and postgraduate courses from the present academic year. They said that it had become difficult to commence classes for first year degree courses from June 20 as the teachers were busy with examinations and evaluation. In his reply, Prof. Bari said that the uniform calendar of events for undergraduate and postgraduate courses State-wide was designed to ensure mobility for the students who had completed undergraduate courses to join postgraduate courses in any university of the State. Uniformity in the date of exams and announcement of results would help students find employment, he said. The meeting gave approval to allow students, who have completed ITI, to join degree courses. Prof. Bari announced that the candidates, who had completed ITI, could join any degree course offered by the university from the present academic year. Registrar Krishnappa was present.
