Over 56 per cent students of government schools fail in the examination A total of 4,15,037 students appeared for examination this year CUTTACK: Against a record pass percentage of 71.74 last year, only 66.75 per cent students of the State who appeared for the annual High School Certificate (HSC) examination were able to clear it this year. More shockingly, government schools students recorded a dismal show as more than 56 per cent students from these schools failed in the examinations, results of which were declared by the State Board of Secondary Education on Saturday. A worried State government, however, indicated to look into dismal performances of students studying in the government, aided and bulk-grant schools which are directly under the Department of School and Mass Education Department. “We will look into this and the result this year is not satisfactory,” said School and Mass Education Minister Pratap Jena when asked about the reasons why the government schools students are not doing well in comparison to their counterparts in private schools However, the silver lining of the result was the individual performance of this year's topper Sarthak Pradhan of Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Balangir who secured a record 97.66 per cent of marks, an all-time record in the history of Orissa Matriculation examination. A total of 4,15,037 students appeared this year's exams in regular stream of which 54,464 students passed in first division securing more than 60 per cent marks, 76,902 passed in second division while 1,42,354 students were placed in third division. Similarly, 49,252 students wrote the papers in ex-regular stream of which 17,423 passed recording a pass percentage of mere 37.45. More than 56 percent students had passed in ex-regular stream last year. The results of students studying in correspondence course were also declared. Boys excel Unlike most other examinations in the country, the boys in HSC examinations are consistently doing better than the girl students. While 68.75 per cent boys passed the examination in regular stream, the pass percentage among girls was a little less at 64.73. The same pattern was also seen in other streams as well. The results this year also showed another dismal statistics when it was learnt that as many as 7,030 students were booked for malpractices during the examinations that were held in March and results of 789 students were withheld for various reasons. Board of Secondary Education president Satyakam Mishra said while only 274 schools showed 100 percent results (439 schools last year), as many as 193 schools in the State showed ‘nil' results. Only 43 schools had registered ‘nil' result last year. District-wise analysis of results reveals that students of Dhenkanal have registered the highest pass-percentage (79.55) while the tribal district Kandhamal recorded (49.19) pass percentage, the lowest in the State.
