Erode
ERODE: The arrival of jackfruit has picked up in the Erode market following increased supply from Yercaud and a few other parts of the State. he market gets huge loads of jackfruit everyday and the demand for the fruit has also increased significantly. “Mangoes and jackfruit rule the fruit market this summer. The demand for both the fruits is good this year,” traders point out. There is no significant change in the price of the fruit during this summer when compared to the previous year. A medium sized fruit weighing around 15 kg is being sold for Rs. 160 to 180 in the retail. “The small sized fruits are available for a price ranging from Rs. 80 to 100,” M. Rajeshkumar a trader said. Currently, the traders are procuring the fruit from Yercaud, Udhagamandalam and a few other places in Tamil Nadu. “The fruit is available for cheaper rates in Tamil Nadu, when compared to the prices in Kerala. Besides, the transport charges will be very less if we procure the fruit within Tamil Nadu. This enables traders to offer the fruit at nominal rates to the consumers,” Mr. Rajeshkumar points out. Consumers have expressed serious concern over the practice of artificial ripening of the fruit. A few weeks ago, health officials in Bhavani had seized over one tonne of jackfruit, which were ripened using artificial methods.
