‘Upgradation will accelerate development'

Staff Reporter

Demand for new status long-standing

A section of the local leaders opposed the upgradation move

Ruling party leaders hail the decision of the government

KHAMMAM: Khammam municipality is poised to attain the status of a corporation with the State government reportedly giving its nod for the upgradation of the civic body. The move is likely to pave way for the development of civic infrastructure in the town, which remained underdeveloped for want of adequate funds so far.

The elected representatives of various political parties, more particularly of the ruling Congress, have been seeking corporation status to Khammam municipality, which is more than five decades old, for a long.

However, a section of the local leaders belonging to some neighbouring gram panchayats have opposed the upgradation of the civic body on the ground that it would impose heavy burden of taxes on the poor people. A total of 14 gram panchayats adjoining the town are likely to be brought under the corporation limits, sources said.

Meanwhile, the ruling party leaders hailed the reported decision of the government to upgrade the municipality into corporation. Former municipal vice chairman P. Venkateshwarlu said that the upgradation of the municipality would usher in accelerated development of the town and result in provision of improved civic amenities to the residents. It would also help the government employees in the town get enhanced HRA, he said.
