Hospital is the brainchild of Sadhuram Alimchand, an expat businessman
Good Samaritan:The 80-bed hospital was established in June 1974 and has so far conducted 2,25,000 eye surgeries out of which 70 per cent were done free of cost. – HYDERABAD: For long, this hospital was the only alternative for poor patients needing high-end surgeries related to different eye ailments. The hospital was, and continues to remain, synonymous with free cataract surgeries and eye camps, especially for the poor. The Lions Club of Hyderabad-Sadhuram Eye Hospital, Domalguda, which is celebrating its 37th year in Hyderabad on Sunday, is among the oldest eye hospitals in the capital to have introduced high-end surgeries at an affordable cost. Sarojini Devi Government Eye Hospital is the other facility, which has extended affordable medical care to patients suffering from eye ailments. To mark the completion of its 37 years, Lions Club of Hyderabad Sadhuram Eye Hospital, Domalguda is holding its annual day on Sunday on its premises. Minister for Medical and Health D. L. Ravindra Reddy is scheduled to take part in the celebrations, Secretary to the Eye Hospital, Gurucharan Bhavani said. The Sadhuram Eye Hospital was the brainchild of Sadhuram Alimchand, a successful businessman who made it big in the West Indies. “He was a successful entrepreneur in Trinidad. One day, he dreamt of a blind child trying unsuccessfully to cross an empty street. He related the dream to his wife Kalavati and evinced interest to help blind people. Later, he died suddenly. His wife returned to Hyderabad and along with other relatives set up the Sadhuram Alimchand Trust,” recalls Mr. Bhavani. Lions initiative Lions Club of Hyderabad authorities decided to join the project and a combined charitable trust was established. The 80-bed hospital was established in June 1974 and has so far conducted 2,25,000 various kinds of eye surgeries out of which 70 per cent were done totally free of cost for the needy. The hospital doctors have conducted numerous eye camps in and around Hyderabad. The hospital authorities said that in future, the facility will be developed into a 100-bed hospital providing state-of-the-art eye care at affordable prices. The 37th annual day celebrations will be attended by freedom fighter Y. Sivarama Sastry and other top office bearers of Lions Club Hyderabad Sadhuram Eye Hospital.
