HYDERABAD: The murder of Congress leader P. Vasanth Kumar, 37, at Moula Ali in Kushaiguda was the consequence of a land dispute and political rivalry, the police said on Saturday after arresting three persons in the case. The prime accused G. Uma Venkateshwar Rao, 47, a real estate businessman from Nagayalanka of Krishna district, settled at HB Colony in Kushaiguda in 1995. He had enmity with Kumar since 1999 when he attacked the latter's friend Bheem with a stick after an argument during Ganesh festival celebrations. Bheem subsequently died. Rao was arrested in that murder case, but got acquitted of the charge three years later. Meanwhile, the real estate businessman switched over from Telugu Desam Party to Congress. This further deepened the rift between him and Kumar who was already in Congress. Kumar was planning to contest as corporator, but was denied Congress ticket in the last minute. He believed Rao was behind denial of the party ticket to him and started interfering in the transactions of the real estate businessman. While Rao purchased a land admeasuring 1,000 square yards at Nagaram and got it registered, Kumar claimed rights over it and even removed the board installed in the name of Rao at the site. “Angered over this, Rao hatched a plot to eliminate the Congress leader and sought help of his associates G. Sudesh and K.M.B. Rao,” the Kushaiguda Inspector V. Srikanth Goud said. On June 20, the trio hit Kumar's car with their four-wheeler at HB Colony. When the victim got off his vehicle, they hurled chilli powder and attacked him .
