Path to progress: Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy going round the Hundri-Neeva canal pumping station at Malyala in Kurnool district on Saturday as Ministers Sudharshan Reddy and N. Raghuveera Reddy look on.

KURNOOL: Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy asked the irrigation officials to speed up the Hundri-Neeva Canal works to enable water release for the current kharif crop in Kurnool district. The canal would be commissioned anytime after August to irrigate 20,000 acres this season.

Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy, accompanied by some Ministers, made a whirlwind tour of the district on Saturday inspecting the Hundri-Neeva pumping station works at Malyala near Nandikotkur, attending the concluding function of Education Fortnight celebrations at Banganapalli and the inauguration of a nursing college in Kurnool. He rounded off his tour with a review with the officials.

Giant motors

The Chief Minister spent more than half an hour at the Malyala pumping station examining the Hundri-Neeva canal, the biggest in Andhra Pradesh and the giant motors installed to draw 3,850 cusecs from the foreshore of Srisailam reservoir.

Twelve giant pumpsets, each consuming 5 MW of power, were installed to pump 321 cusecs of water. The first phase works costing Rs. 2.774 crore would provide irrigation 80,000 acres in Kurnool and 1.18 lakh acres in Anantapur district. Mr. Reddy said the canal, designed to provide irrigation to six lakh acres in three districts, was bogged down under certain issues on land acquisition and construction fronts, which he hoped to overcome. Irrigation Secretary Rajiv Ranjan Mishra made a presentation of the status of the canal. Later, the Chief Minister flew to Banganapallli where he inaugurated KGBV School and laid foundation for model schools.

He told the public meeting that none of the old schemes were shelved down, but rendered more effective by improving delivery mechanism.
