The men and women, who presented a petition to the Collector, V. Arun Roy, said that atleast 20 to 25 loads of garbage from Kilakarai municipality had been dumped daily at a place between Kumbidumadurai and Alwarkoottam.
The people residing at Kumbidumadurai, Alwarkootam, Singarathoppu, Palanjirai had been affected due to the bad environment caused by the heaps of garbage. It had polluted the air.
It had been the cause for illness such as cough, allergies, and fever to the residents, who were forced to inhale polluted air. Women, children and elders were badly affected.
They said though the Municipal authorities stopped the practice for some time due to opposition from the villagers they had resumed the dumping operation with police protection. The Kilakarai municipal authorities should find an alternate place for dumping the waste. If their grievances were not given due attention, they would said they would conduct a series of agitations.
