Private managements to make own admissions

KOCHI: The Kerala Private Medical College Managements Association has decided to admit students on its own to 85 per cent of the seats in its 11 affiliated colleges.

A uniform fee of Rs.3.5 lakh will be charged for these seats as per an order issued by the Kerala High Court.

The remaining 15 per cent seats come under the NRI category.

Addressing the media after a meeting of representatives of member medical colleges here on Saturday, Sajan Prasad, general secretary, said the admission process would begin on June 30.

The admission notification would be issued on July 1. Managements would complete the admission procedure before September 30.

Mr. Prasad said the association would take a decision on whether to conduct an entrance test on its own based on a directive given by the Supreme Court, which is hearing a case related to the issue on Tuesday. He said the managements would fill the seats from the rank list published by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, if the apex court rejected the plea for conducting an entrance test.

MCI deadline

Stating that the admission process had to be completed before the deadline issued by the Medical Council of India (MCI), Fazal Gafoor, president, said the four medical colleges affiliated to the Kerala Christian Professional Colleges Federation had already initiated admission procedures based on the MCI schedule.

He said the adamant stance taken by the federation was responsible for the impasse over the admission in the State.

Dr. Gafoor said the association wanted to ensure social justice and merit in the admission but cannot accept the fact that it was not applicable to the colleges affiliated to the federation.
