TIRUPATI: The Left parties appear to be bracing themselves up for a nationwide agitation to counter the alleged attacks on their cadres, particularly on the CPI(M) workers and its party offices in West Bengal by the Trinamul Congress activists after the recent elections. An indication to this effect was given here on Sunday by CPI(M)'s Central committee leader and the State committee member, M.A. Gafoor, while addressing a party workers convention. He said that just because the Left combination was defeated in the West Bengal, it should not be construed by its rivals that the Left had lost its roots and foundation in the State. In fact it polled 41 per cent votes and became the single largest party, he claimed. Mr. Gafoor also sought to attribute the defeat to a distinct anti-incumbency factor coupled with a ‘vicious disinformation campaign' run by the anti-Left forces in the media. As for the Congress party, he said that there was nothing for the so-called national party to cheer up because it had put up a dismal performance in all the States.
