Letters to the Editor
A big salute to Pakistani social activist Ansar Burney for his humanitarian gesture in ensuring the release of the stranded Indian sailors on board the ship m.v. Suez held captive by Somali pirates (“Six sailors return home from captivity,” June 25). More important, it brings out a sterling quality — of a human being rescuing fellow human beings in distress. Deepa Nagaraj, Bangalore It is unfortunate that the Indian government did not appear to be concerned about the fate of our sailors. The fact that no official was in sight at the IGI Airport, New Delhi, on June 24 when the sailors arrived highlights this. It is sad that a foreign human rights activist could do what our own leaders should have done. Nandhini Narayanan, Chennai Amid the happy news, there has been a bitter fallout (“INS Godavari damaged in PNS Babur manoeuvres,” June 25). Diplomacy should have been used. The pro-active role by Mr. Burney highlights the need for more interaction between the peoples of both countries. We must recall Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao's words, “Military conflict has no space in the 21st century.” T. Charles John Bhaskar, Chennai
