KOCHI: Railway's Vikramaditya Kulkarni won the 49th National Challengers chess championship at Aurangabad on Sunday. The 13-round event saw four players — Tamil Nadu's P. Shyam Nikhil, Railway's M.S. Thejkumar and Petroleum Board's M.R. Venkatesh being the others — finish level with 9.5 points but Vikramaditya was declared the champion on a superior Buchholz score. Shyam Nikhil, the 12th seed who drew his last-round game against the top-seeded M.R. Venkatesh, finished runner-up while Thejkumar was third. Incidentally, 15 of the top 16 finishers were all International Masters. The top 30 players from the event qualified for the National Premier Championship which will be held in October. Sudhakar Babu drew with P. Konguvel; Saptarshi Roy drew with Varugeese Koshy; Girish A. Koushik drew with Somak Palit; B.T. Murali Krishnan drew with Shashikant Kutwal; G.
