Sanitation drive to be intensified in tribal areas

Bid to tackle spread of epidemics during rains

Mananthavady: Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Tribes P.K. Jayalakshmi has said that the sanitation drive would be intensified in tribal colonies in the district to tackle epidemics such as cholera during the rains.

She was speaking to mediapersons after visiting the Odamerikkunni Paniya Colony, near here, on Sunday.

Ms. Jayalakshmi said a coordination committee of Tribal, Revenue and Health officials, the three-tier local administration, and Kudumbasree units would be constituted to tackle the epidemics.

She disbursed an ex gratia of Rs.30,000 each to the families of Karupi and Kumaran who died of cholera recently.

A meeting of people's representatives and top officials steered by Ms. Jayalakshmi here decided to call back the Health officials who had taken leave in order to tackle the emergency situation.
