PALAKKAD: The State government has decided to grant recognition to Bethany English Medium School to run classes I to X from the 2010-11 academic year. A special leave petition (SLP) filed by the school, against a State government appeal seeking to annul a High Court directive, is pending before the Supreme Court. The school is run by the Tribal Mission, a voluntary organisation. The school, which provided free education and boarding to 120 tribal students, had been trying to get recognition since 2003. The school authorities had approached the High Court after their application was rejected initially (by the State government). The High Court had given a favourable verdict on August 18, 2010. But the State government preferred an appeal in the Supreme Court. The government's plea to get the functioning of the school stopped was rejected by the apex court. The State government, in its order ‘G.O. (Rt) no.2181\11\G. Education dated June 9, 2011,' granted sanction ‘subject to the outcome of the SLP.' The school authorities said the school was ‘recommended for recognition' by the Sholayur grama panchayat and the Attappady block panchayat in view of the lack of educational facilities in the area. The school had computer and science labsand trained teachers, authorities said. The school's first SSLC batch took their examination at another school of the Tribal Mission in 2011. All the 11 students passed in higher grade. Nine of them were tribal students.
