Call to enhance awareness of consequences of drug addition

To end the menace: The Nilgiris Collector Archana Patnaik flagging off an anti drug abuse and trafficking rally in Udhagamandalam on Sunday. -

Udhagamandalam: A rally marked the observance of World Anti Drug Abuse and Trafficking Day organized by the district administration here on Sunday.

It was flagged off by the Nilgiris Collector Archana Patnaik.

Presiding over a function which formed part of the event, the District Revenue Officer in-charge Nagarajan stressed the need to enhance awareness about the consequences of addiction to drugs and other forms of intoxicants.

He pointed out that it not only affected seriously the addicts but also the society in general and the younger generation in particular.

Stating that posterity also was placed in jeopardy, he said that the mental and physical well being of the addicts and those close to them suffered.

Efforts should be made in order to keep at bay such items.

Superintendent of Police S.Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar said that earlier drug addicts were shunned by the society in the hope that it would help them reform.

Regrettably now, taking drugs has become a status symbol. Attributing it to a desire among some of the youth to stand out in a crowd, he said that such misguided persons should be put on the right path.

Generally addicts are involved in thefts and major crimes like theft and murder.

He lamented that even girls are now becoming slaves to drugs and other intoxicants.

Students should be constantly conscious of the lurking danger.

Among those who also spoke were the Revenue Divisional Officer, Coonoor, Ganthimathi; Chief Educational Officer L.D.Ranganathan and the Chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, K.R.Mani.

Assistant Commissioner Excise M.Mubarak Ali welcomed the gathering.

Prizes were distributed to students who had excelled in various competitions that were organized as part of the observance.
