Boy charged with killing friend

BERHAMPUR: Tussle over Rs. 10 led to a murder by an eight-year-old boy on Saturday. The boy allegedly killed his friend at Pushtapur village under the Beguniapada police outpost in Ganjam district. The victim, Simanchal Das (8), reportedly won the amount during gambling. A team of police officials, including Sub-Divisional Police Officer P.K. Jali and in-charge of Beguniapada police outpost Biswaranjan Sahu reached the spot to investigate the case.

The accused boy was taken into custody. The incident brought to light the prevalence of gambling in Ganjam district even among the children of tender age.

According to sources, the tussle between the two started while a couple children indulged in gambling on Friday and Simanchal won Rs. 10. The accused boy asked Simanchal to give him the amount. When Simanchal refused, it led to an altercation between them.

Mr. Sahu said the incident took violent turn on Saturday near the village pond at Pushtapur. The victim, the accused and two others went to the pond to attend nature's call and to have a bath. Simanchal and the accused boy again had an altercation over Rs. 10 won by the former.

According to the other boys, both of them threw stones at each other. In a rage, the accused boy took a wooden plank and beat up the head of Simanchal with it. He died on the spot.

In Ganjam district gambling is not considered a major sin. So, children also get indulged in it. During ‘Kumarpurnima' festivities, parents promote gambling among their children in most parts of the district.
