State sends IIIT proposal to Centre

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: Not long after securing a regional centre of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Kottayam seems to be exploiting its potential of being an education hub.

The prospects of establishing a centre of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in the district appear bright.

Jose K. Mani, MP, had held discussion with Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal, according to a statement issued by the MP's office here on Sunday.

Proposals had been submitted to the Central and State governments, the statement said. A detailed framework was forwarded to the Centre by the State government on May 26.

Two sites

Two plots of land had been identified in the district for the setting up of the institute. The first phase of the project would cost around Rs.128 crore.

The project would create greater self-sufficiency by ensuring maximum utilisation of opportunities in the field of education, the statement said.

Likely courses

A variety of subjects like Cognitive Informatics, Social Informatics and New Media, Sports Informatics, Mechatronics and Entertainment Informatics, and Legal Studies and Forensic Informatics could be offered at the institute, Mr. Mani said.
