Vasanth upsets second seed Rohith, enters quarterfinals

Bangalore: Vasanth Kumar, seeded 20th, upset second seed Rohith Karnatak 21-19, 21-17 in the boys' under-17 pre-quarterfinals of the W. Suresh Kumar Memorial State-ranking badminton tournament that commenced at the KBA and Canara Union Courts, here on Sunday.

Kuldeep wins

Hav. Kuldeep Singh of host ASC Centre & College won the National equestrian championship that concluded here on Sunday.

Trailing Ris. Rajpal Singh in the Three Day Event standings after the dressage and cross country competitions,

Hav. Kuldeep inched ahead with his superior performance in the show-jumping – the final part of the triathlon – to claim the individual title. LD Govind Ram finished in third place.

RVC Centre & College ‘B', comprising Ris. Rajpal, Swr. Rajender Singh, Nb. Ris. Narender Singh, and LD Hari Om, bagged the team title.

The tenth competitor to take his turn in the 10-jump arena, Hav. Kuldeep looked assured astride Trishul, faltering only at three obstacles to incur a total of 12 faults.

While the first six jumps were flawless, Trishul foundered on the seventh, knocking over the rails on the 1.15m fence – the highest on the 370m course.

The following two jumps – a vertical and the Liverpool – were cleared with ease but the horse struggled on the final one, dropping two of the three obstacles that made up the combination jump.

Ris. Rajpal may have been the favourite at that point, but the RVC Centre & College rider, astride Mustafa, knocked over six obstacles, incurring 24 faults, to hand his rival the title.

Salauddin scalps five

Helped by a five-wicket haul by leg-spinner Md. Salauddin (five for 56), The Mysore Gymkhana registered a facile four-wicket win over Jaihind CC ‘A' in the KSCA Mysore Zone first division league tie played at PET grounds, Mandya on Sunday.

First Division: Jaihind CC ‘A' 193 in 49.2 overs (M.B.Vinay 68, Ganesh 30, Karthik Raghavan 33, Imran Sherrif 29, Md. Salauddin five for 56) lost to The Mysore Gymkhana 197 for six in 38.2 overs (Uttam Raj 50, Yogesh

Third Division: CPC Polytechnic 163 in 41 overs (K Manjunath 52, M.V. Karthik 36, S. Chandrashekar six for 42) bt Garner CC 145 in 31.5 overs (Lohith 34, N.V. Karthik five for 42, Harsha three for 27) .

Sumantha shines

Sumantha's brace (34th and 47th minutes) helped Dhyanchand HC blank Warrior SC 5-0 in a ‘C' division hockey league match at the KSHA Stadium here on Sunday. Bharathi, Deepu and Vivek also scored for the victor.

BDFA elections

M.P. Swamy, S.T. Bhoopal and R. Ramakrishna were unanimously re-elected as the chairman, secretary and treasurer respectively of the Bangalore District Football Association in Bangalore on Sunday.
