Stepping up:The former India cricket captain after signing a banner pledging to eradicate polio at Cubbon Park in Bangalore on Sunday. BANGALORE: The former Indian Test captain Anil Kumble batted for the eradication of polio at the End Polio Now campaign here on Sunday. Mr. Kumble unveiled the pledge banner at Cubbon Park for the campaign organised by Rotary International District 3190. “We've almost eradicated polio, and we must continue the effort. We must fight until the last wicket falls. The tenth wicket is the hardest to get,” he said, addressing those who had gathered to sign the pledge. Pledge Mr. Kumble signed the pledge as well, even as he posed for photos with fans and volunteers. The banner near Century Club at Cubbon Park will be up for two days for the public to sign. “Over 20,000 people have pledged their support to the cause,” said Madhura Chatrapathy, chief catalyst of the campaign. Ms. Chatrapathy said donors included children and handloom factory workers, who donated funds as they “understood and appreciated the problem of polio”. Also present at the event were M.K. Panduranga Setty, former Rotary International director and vice-chair of Polio Plus, South East Asia Regional Organisation; and P. Narayan, vice-chairman of National Polio Plus.
