Political parties back agitating veterinary students in Tirupati TIRUPATI: The condition of the seven veterinary graduates, who have been on a ‘fast-unto-death' for the last three days demanding the scrapping of the controversial G.O. Rt. No: 91, is said to be deteriorating, according to a statement released by the striking students – quoting doctors who are attending to them. The students were forced to turn their month-long agitation into a fast-unto-death programme on Friday since the one-week deadline which the Minister for Animal Husbandry had reportedly set himself to find a solution to end the impasse had expired on Thursday last. The prolonged agitation by the students has now started assuming political overtones with the district and city unit leaders of the opposition parties calling on the fasting students and expressing solidarity with their agitation, decrying the ‘callous attitude' of the government towards a ‘burning issue' concerning the students. Alarming situation The striking students have, in a statement, expressed serious concern over the deteriorating health condition of their fasting colleagues and regretted that even this alarming situation was not able to move the powers that be in the Ministry to get into action to withdraw the G.O. They alleged that the G.O. ran counter to the Presidential Order in the implementation of the Zonal System vis-a-vis their postings in government services. Students' representatives said that far from sticking to the deadline the Animal Husbandry Minister had set himself, the concerned authorities were said to have been unhappy with the students for ‘going ahead with their ‘fast-unto-death' programme, without waiting for some more time.
