CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Sunday announced that five per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) levied on kerosene would be waived off. Now, Rs.14 per litre He said here that the decision to make kerosene VAT-free would make it cheaper by 70 paise per litre and now it would cost Rs.14 per litre instead of Rs.14.70 per litre. He added that his regime had already withdrawn VAT levied on LPG in 2008. Mr. Hooda further said his regime would take additional steps to control price rise in Haryana. He disclosed that Haryana was charging a minimum 8.8 per cent (9.24 per cent, including surcharge) on diesel, which was the lowest VAT rate in the country. Justifying the hike in rates of petro products, he said that the Centre had to do so because of the increase in global prices. Centre's directions He added that his regime had decided to waive off VAT in accordance with the directions of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to minimise the burden on the masses. Striking a political note, he said that the BJP-ruled States were charging maximum VAT on diesel which was 24.7 per cent in Gujarat, 23 per cent in Madhya Pradesh and 22 per cent in Chhattisgarh. The diesel rates in Haryana were also the lowest in the country, he added.
