MADURAI: Members of MUTA (Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa and Alagappa University Teachers' Association) have on Sunday welcomed the decision of the State Principal Higher Education Secretary R. Kannan in stalling steps taken by the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) authorities to increase the strength of various degree courses in this academic year. According to MUTA president S. Vivekanandan, in their hastiness to sanction such increased strength, the MKU authorities have failed to consult even the convener of the Conveners of the Committee of MKU, namely the Secretary for Higher Education. The self-financing colleges in the State were experiencing a heavy rush for admission into degree courses. University authorities had also readily complied with their request and sanctioned increased strength without verifying the actual need for the increase and monitoring the infrastructure requirements in the college. Prof. Vivekanandan further said that the education secretary Dr. Kannan had intervened at the right time and checked the decision taken by the MKU in a hasty manner. On the other hand, the MUTA welcomed such a demand for higher education in arts and science, but at the same time, caution must be taken to accommodate these aspirants in a judicious manner. The MUTA urged the Education Secretary and MKU authorities to study the present situation carefully and take proper action for sanctioning the increased strength. The MUTA also wanted them to ensure implementation of reservation policy for the increased strength as well. The authorities should consider the merit list while making admissions and the increased strength should not be unwieldy and cause strain to teachers. The government should take stringent action against those managements which violated the norms for admissions and collected extra fees, Prof. Vivekanandan said.
