Walkathon against drug abuse in Tuticorin

Tuticorin: To commemorate the International Day against Drug Abuse, Indian Coast Guard Station conducted a walkathon here on Sunday. More than a hundred personnel of the station joined the walkathon which commenced from the Coast Guard residential area and concluded at V.O.Chidambaranar Port Trust guest house.

On completion of the walkathon, a lecture on drug abuse, its illicit trade and effects was imparted to the participants.

The objective of this programme was to give impetus and to generate awareness among the people about the drug abuse, its effects in the society and personal health, prevention and treatment, according to a statement.

In association with Narcotics Intelligence Bureau, Empower, a voluntary organisation, organised a seminar to create awareness among public of the ill-effects of drugs. Under the slogan “Global Action for Healthy Communities without Drugs”, this year's campaign aimed at mobilising support and inspire people to act against drug abuse.

The programme was held at Government Children's Home at Thattaparai here on Sunday. It was inaugurated by E. Paulraj, Superintendent, Government Children's Home. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Narcotics Intelligence Bureau, Joy Issac Pandi, in her welcome address said that “the younger generation is considered the pillars of our nation. The young children are the future of India. Hence each and every one should set a target to achieve it”.

The children could make friendship with one another but the friendship should not be the root cause of evil. They should be very cautious in not deviating their attention.
