Bloomers galore on Aadhaar cards

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Srikant Khuntia, a 24-year-old youth, was eagerly waiting for issue of much-hyped Aadhaar card (Unique Identification Card). But, little did he know that he was in for a shock.

Srikant saw his name written as ‘Sarinknat' in Oriya language. The distorted spelling of words written in Oriya language was all over the card. Names collected in English language were possibly translated into Oriya language through ‘faulty' software. The result is evident. Suresh Chandra Khuntia found his name spelt in Oriya as ‘Suresh Chandar Khunatia.'

“Name of mine or my family members are not the only ones which were wrongly spelt in Oriya, our neighbour too complain of similar misrepresentations of their names in the mother language,” says Suresh Chandra Khuntia, a resident of Sahid Nagar.

When contacted, P.K. Mohanty, Deputy General Manager of Central Bank of India, which was entrusted with the task of preparing UID cards in some parts of Bhubaneswar said, “our work is to upload correct names in English and send those to Bangalore for registration. Not every card is wrongly misrepresented. There could some technical mistakes for which distortion of names in Oriya language takes place.”

“We will intimate the mistake to Unique Identification Authority of India. People who would mistakes on their UID card should inform their nearest Central Bank of India branch,” says Mr. Mohanty.
