THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was jointly observed by the Anti-Narcotic Action Centre of India (ANACI), Department of Information and Public Relations, Local Self-Government Department and the State Youth Welfare Board, on Sunday, at the VJT Hall here. A year-long anti-narcotics awareness programme was also launched, which is aimed at creating awareness of health and hygiene and prevention of contagious diseases. “Observance of such days is important to create awareness in society as abuse of drugs, alcohol and tobacco is a cause for concern in the State. “Such initiatives would definitely help towards achieving greater progress in the fight against these social evils,” said G. Karthikeyan, Speaker, Kerala Legislative Assembly, while inaugurating the function. He added that various tourist destinations were among centres of drug dealers. Poultry development As part of the programme, Mayor K. Chandrika launched the Kudumbajyothi poultry development project. Seminars and cultural programmes were held in the morning session. The ANACI awards were also distributed to the winners. The ANACI has also planned to launch several awareness campaigns and projects in view of the high rate of alcohol consumption in the State. The event was also attended by Shaji Prabhakaran, chairman, ANACI; Ramani. P. Nair, president, district panchayat; A. Hemachandran, ADGP, Intelligence; and Kallikkadu Babu, director, ANACI.
