Thiruvananthapuram: Transport Minister V.S. Sivakumar said here on Saturday that the reconstruction of the old Vallakadavu and Ponnara bridges would be taken up this year. Addressing a review meeting convened to discuss the progress of development projects in his constituency, he said the construction of a new bridge at Paruthikuzhy would also begin this year. The Minister told the meeting that the government had sanctioned Rs.1.25 crore to clean up the polluted Parvathy Puthanar canal and construct sidewalls along the waterway. Steps would be taken to issue title deeds to 150 families with possession certificates to their land located in Sultan Street, Madhavapuram and Bala Nagar areas in Kadakampally village. The project will be taken up under the Chief Minister's 100-day programme. The Minister said Rs. 4.25 crore was being spent on cleaning 28 stormwater drains and reconstructing 31 roads in the city. Another Rs.6 crore was earmarked for restoration of 15 roads. Mr..Sivakumar directed officials to find speedy solutions to the problems raised by councillors and representatives of residents' associations. He discussed the possibility of total electrification of houses in the constituency and enhancing transmission efficiency. He assured the meeting of steps to resolve the problems of the travelling public by introducing more KSRTC buses.
