BANGALORE: The two-tier fee structure for government quota seats in private engineering colleges makes this year's engineering admissions a tad confusing. Students will have to take two sets of demand drafts, one for Rs. 33,090 and the other for Rs. 38,090 (of which 3,090 is a one-time admission fee), according to the college they choose. The list of colleges and the fee slab that they have opted for is available on the Karnataka Examinations Authority website. As per the announcement on the website, most of the top colleges appear to have chosen the lower fee slab. This is not surprising given that colleges that charge an annual fee of Rs. 30,000 (same as last year's fee) will get to charge Rs. 1.25 lakh for seats offered under COMED-K quota. Colleges that collect Rs. 35,000 can only collect fees up to Rs. 1 lakh under private quota. The admission rounds for engineering are slated to commence on July 7, subject to clearance from the AICTE . This year, according to the agreement that was signed between the private colleges and the government, 45 per cent of seats in private colleges are under the government quota. Given that many colleges are under extreme pressure due to many seats remaining vacant in recent years, the tier-II and tier-III colleges have opted for the Rs. 35,000 (and Rs. 1 lakh for COMED-K seat) fee slab. Speaking to The Hindu, president of Karnataka Unaided Private Colleges Association Panduranga Shetty said colleges were walking a tightrope this year as maintenance costs had gone up.
