VIJAYAWADA: As paddy nurseries are on the brink of getting totally damaged due to a long dry spell, the farmers have demanded the Irrigation Department to release water to full capacity of canals in the Krishna Eastern Main so that the seedbeds can be saved. Kisan Service Organisation district general secretary P.S.R. Das said that the nurseries being raised in tail-end areas would face the threat of damage if the officials do not release sufficient water into the KE canal system which caters to Gudiwada and interior areas. He said that obstructions like water hyacinth were leading to slow movement of water, which was another concern for farmers now. In some areas in Krishna delta, farmers may have to go for new nurseries as some damage was done to the seedbeds due to the dry spell. Normally it would take five to six days for water to reach tail end areas and additional water release would help in speeding up this process, he added.
