CID quizzes film producer Ramesh

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Film producer Singanamala Ramesh was grilled by police for several hours on Sunday about his links with Maddalacheruvu Suri alias Gangula Suryanarayana Reddy, after officials of the Crime Investigation Department arrested him in Chennai and brought him here.

He was arrested on Friday in connection with three cases of fraud and cheating and flown here on Saturday evening on a transit warrant issued by a Chennai court. He will be produced in a CID court here on Monday.

The marathon interrogation of the producer, lodged in the CID office, focussed on prising out information about his finances and links with Suri. Inspector-General of Police S. Umapathy, declined to divulge any details and merely maintained that he would be produced in court on Monday.

It is learnt that police stumbled on the connection between Bhanukiran and the producer, based on an examination of call data records (CDR) of cellular SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards used by Bhanukiran, two weeks ago. Once the police established the producer's connection, he was tracked down in Chennai. In all, data from 20 SIM cards were scrutinised.

Officials also found that Mr. Ramesh and Bhanukiran had properties under several names in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.

On Saturday evening, police searched the Hyderabad residence and other premises of the producer and were said to have recovered several property documents. Apart from two other cases, a couple lodged a complaint last week with the police that the producer had allegedly taken a loan from them by showing documents of property against which he had borrowed huge sums of money from other people too. When asked to repay, he and Bhanukiran had allegedly threatened them.

Mr. Singamala Ramesh produced the runaway hits like ‘Pokkiri' and more recently ‘Khaleja', both starring Mahesh Babu and ‘Komaram Puli', with Pawan Kalyan in the lead.
