Tumkur: Fifteen kg of gold, worth about Rs. 1 crore, and Rs. 6,000 cash were stolen from Manappuram Finance office near the bus-stand at Pavagada in Tumkur district on Sunday night. Sequence of events According to the Pavagada police, the security guard manning the office on Sunday night claimed that he received a phone call from someone who said that he was office staff. The caller said the office staff was coming for an inspection. By 9 p.m. a man arrived at the office and on being asked by the guard, showed his identity card. As soon as he went inside, the guard said two people caught him, taped his mouth and tied his hands with a rope. They then disconnected the close-circuit television camera (CCTV) and the burglar alarm. The two then took away the gold from the safe, to which they had the key, and the cash from the office. They also took away the CCTV system. All this happened in 10 minutes flat, the police said. Help sought The police said that the security guard did not seek help immediately. He reached the police station with his hands tied only by 11 p.m. The police rushed to the spot with the dog squad and fingerprint experts. Inside job? They suspect the heist to be an inside job as only the manager and the assistant manager had the keys of the safe. In addition, the guard's hands were tied in front and not behind his back. Superintendent of Police Suresh, who visited the spot, told The Hindu that a special team, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Shivashankar, had been constituted to arrest the burglars.
