More trains to operate on Bangalore-Mysore route

R. Krishna Kumar

MYSORE: The introduction of the three new trains that will operate on the Bangalore-Mysore section from July 1, 2011 is the direct result of the augmented track capacity owing to partial completion of track-doubling work in the section.

Sources in the Mysore division of the South Western Railway told The Hindu that the launch of the new trains was an indicator of many more developments to come once the track-doubling and electrification work between Mysore and Bangalore was completed.

These are Rajya Rani Express, Yeshwanthpur-Bangalore-Mysore Express and a weekly superfast express between Mysore and Chennai.

Constraints

Earlier, there were constraints in operating new trains between Mysore and Bangalore as the 139-km stretch was a single-line track, the sources said. This route was among the busiest in the country with little freight operations and only passenger traffic.

However, the completion of track-doubling work between Bangalore and Channapatna in the last few years has augmented the track capacity and cleared the bottleneck. As a result, capacity utilisation of the track in the stretch had come down from 110 per cent to 60 per cent, which gave the Railways the flexibility to introduce more trains.

At present, the Mysore Division of the South Western Railways operates 14 express trains and five passenger trains in each direction.Doubling work is in progress between Channapatna-Shettihalli and Maddur while work on the Mysore-Naganahalli stretch has already been completed. Authorities pointed out that the works including the construction of two major bridges across the Cauvery at Srirangapatana was nearing completion.
