LUCKNOW: The police have registered a case of murder in connection with the death of Deputy Chief Medical Officer Y.S. Sachan, based on a complaint by his family members.

The FIR was filed at the Gosainganj police station here on Sunday under Sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 120 (B) (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of the complaint, dated June 23, submitted to the Lucknow DIG by Dr. Sachan's wife, Malti Sachan, and son, Sankalp Sachan. They alleged that Dr. Sachan was murdered to shield some high-profile persons. According to the station in-charge, the FIR is against unidentified persons.

The State government had been claiming that Dr. Sachan's death was prima facie a case of suicide.

Dr. Sachan, who was with the State Family Welfare Department, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Lucknow district jail on Wednesday last. He was the prime accused in the murder of Chief Medical Officer (Family Welfare) B.P. Singh.

The murder case was registered a day before Chief Minister Mayawati presides over a crucial law and order review meeting in the State capital on Monday. The meeting comes in the wake of a spate of rape cases involving minor girls in June — three fresh incidents were reported from Hathras, Barabanki and Kanshi Ram Nagar districts on Sunday.

CBI probe sought

The Mayawati government has come under fire from Opposition parties and Dr. Sachan's family members, who alleged that he was eliminated. They have demanded a CBI probe.

Talking to journalists at his residence on Saturday, Mr. Sankalp Sachan alleged that some high-profile and influential persons were involved in the murder, which was why the government was shying away from referring the case to the CBI.

“Anarchy in U.P.”

In two separate memorandums submitted to Governor B.L. Joshi on Saturday, the Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party demanded the dismissal of the Mayawati government. They said the government had failed to control the law and order situation and there was total anarchy.

While the BJP said there was a constitutional crisis in the State and the Governor should send a report to the Centre, the Samajwadi Party demanded the dismissal of the government to bring out the truth behind Dr. Sachan's murder.
