Spotted deer handed over to Forest Dept.

This is the seventh deer rescued and

let into safe habitat this year

SALEM: A one-and-half-year old female spotted deer, which got strayed into a private field at Mannarpalayam, near here, has been handed over to the officials of Forest department on Monday.

The deer was found lying near the irrigation well in the field of Baskaran located near the jurisdiction of Shevaroyan North Range of forests. The deer came to drink water and lost its way.

When Baskaran noticed it, he immediately alerted the forest officials.

A team of officials led by N Panneerselvam and R Kannan rushed to the spot and tried to catch it.

When the physical attempt failed, they cast a net and got it trapped.

Later they shifted to the Asthampatti forest office from where they transferred it to the Kurumbapatti Zoological Park.

Forest officials told The Hindu that since the female population in the Zoological Park was less in numbers, the animal was taken and released there.

They also said that this was the seventh deer, which was rescued and let into safe habitat this year.

Many other animals were not that lucky since they were either killed by pack of stray dogs or fell into the wells while straying into human habitations for water.
