NALGONDA: The 131st birth anniversary of Helen Keller was celebrated at the blind school here (Surdas Bhavan) on Monday under the auspices of AP Development and Welfare Association of the Blind. Documentary Nalgonda Collector N. Mukteswara Rao released a documentary on the school made by local TV channel IBC. Several prominent persons of the town, including some journalists and photographers, were felicitated. Donations Two journalists donated Rs. 5,000 each to the school, while a retired teacher, M. Linga Rao, contributed his last salary, which was handed over by his wife Vijayamma. T. L. Manik Prabhu, president of SC and ST Employees' Association, who works at Hyderabad RTA, announced that he would adopt one visually-impaired student every year and meet their cost of education. Dr. K. Vittalacharya presided over the function. Educationist K. Chinna Venkat Reddy, Prof. Bhushi, M. Gopal Reddy and P. Chokka Rao, general secretary of the association, attended the programme. Sweets distributed Kadapa Special Correspondent writes: National Students Union of India city president P. Pavan Kumar distributed biscuits, chocolates, and sweets among visually impaired students at the Government High School for the Blind here on Helen Keller's 131st birth anniversary. Helen Keller, who was visually impaired since childhood, had started schools for blind children. The conditions in the school are appalling with choked toilets, stinking environs, and students suffering from malaria, typhoid, and other ailments, the NSUI leader said. He apprised the Assistant Director of Disabled Welfare Bhaskara Reddy about the poor conditions and warned of an agitation. NSUI city secretary Satish and leaders Sai, Siva, Sandeep, and Naresh participated in the programme.
