ERODE: Tension prevailed near the bus stand for a short period on Monday morning when a car caught fire in the middle of the road.

Sources said Arumugam, a resident of Tiruchengode, was on the way to a shop on Sathy main road in his car. He was manoeuvring a curve at Swastik corner when he heard a loud bang at the back of the vehicle.

He then stopped the vehicle to take a look. People gathered there spotted flames in the engulfing the rear of the vehicle, and alerted the fire and rescue services.

Before the rescue team arrived, flames engulfed all the parts of vehicle, causing extensive damage to it. The fire was put out after some struggle.

Liquefied petroleum gas was reportedly used to fuel the car.

“A leak in the gas tank might be the reason. But the real cause of the fire could be ascertained only after a detailed investigation,” fire service personnel here said.
