New project:C.S. Nadgouda, Muddebihal MLA, providing bio-metric details for the Unique Identification Number in Bijapur on Monday. BIJAPUR: Vittal Katakdond, MLA, has said that the Aaadhaar scheme, aimed at providing a Unique Identification Number to citizens, would play a vital role in ensuring that government schemes were not misused. Speaking after inaugurating the scheme at Kandgal Hanumantrai Ranga Mandira here on Monday, he said that as per a recent survey, more than Rs. 150 crore under various government schemes was misused by ineligible persons every year. He said many village residents on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border had ration cards of both the States. “So far, the Government has failed to identify such people owing to lack of a proper mechanism,” he added. Deputy Commissioner S.S. Pattanshetty said the card would be issued to every citizen for free and centres for issuing such cards would be opened in every village. In the first phase, five centres had been opened in the city. In the second and third phases, a total of 257 centres would be opened, he added. MLAs Appasaheb Pattanshetty and C.S. Nadgouda; Arun Shahpur, MLC; Superintendent of Police D.C. Rajappa, and Additional Deputy Commissioner G.S. Jiddimani were present.
