Kochi: The Kerala High Court, on Monday, observed that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) should make an earnest endeavour to complete within three months the investigation into the attack on T.J. Joseph, then a teacher at Newman College, Thodupuzha, whose hand was chopped by a group of people over a controversial question paper he had set. A Division Bench comprising Justice A.K. Basheer and Justice P.Q. Barkathali, while dismissing the bail petitions of the two accused, Shiyas and Mohammedali, observed that religious fanaticism of all hues should be dealt with with a firm hand. A small section belonging to some religion unfortunately “gets carried away by fanaticism and illusory oppression and victimisation.” The Bench said that what was saddening in the case on hand was that the so-called lovers of a particular religion seemed to have forgotten the reality that they were living in a country which gave them absolute freedom to practise their religion. The court pointed out that religious harmony and tolerance that members of the minority community enjoyed was “unparalleled.”The court granted bail to Moideen Kutty, who had been charged with allowing the overnight stay of an accused in the case at his home.
