Stalin's election challenged
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The election of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) treasurer and former Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin from the Kolathur Assembly constituency in the city has been challenged in the Madras High Court.
The losing candidate, Saidai Sa Duraisamy, filed an election petition alleging that Mr. Stalin, who won by a narrow margin of 2,739 votes, had misused his official powers as well as money power during the election campaign.
The petitioner alleged that Mr. Stalin, through his election agent and other functionaries, bribed voters to a large extent.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK nominee in the Tiruvannamalai Assembly segment, S.Ramachandran, has filed a petition in the High Court seeking to declare the election of the returned candidate E.V.Velu of the DMK from the constituency as void. Mr.Ramachandran said Mr.Velu had been declared elected by a margin of 5126 votes. He alleged that Mr.Velu “managed to secure victory by corrupt practices and by bringing upon undue influence on the District Election Officer (DEO) in his capacity as a State Minister.
