Tirupur: The State executive committee of the All India Lawyers' Union (AILU) has called for speedy setting up of National Judicial Commission (NJC) to deal with corruption among judges instead of bringing the judiciary under the Lok Pal. “We are calling for the constitution of NJC as the present collegium system followed with regard to appoint of judges to higher judiciary since 1993 was found to be a failure,” AILU executive president (Tamil Nadu unit) R. Ramamurthy, who is also an MLA, said. He was briefing reporters about the resolutions passed at the meeting, which concluded here on Sunday evening. According to him, the proposal of the legal fraternity to constitute NJC comprising Chief Justice of India, a few senior-most judges from Supreme Court, eminent jurist, a representative from the Bar and political party nominees from Parliament, among others, will bring in transparency in the appointment and transfer of judges. Though the AILU members showed their preference for NJC over Lok Pal to tackle the corruption within the judiciary, they, however, had appealed for the inclusion of Prime Minister under the ambit of Lok Pal. The meeting also reiterated the need to fill the vacancies of judges at the earliest so as to bring down the backlog of pending cases. “At present, one-third of subordinate judges' posts and 25 per cent of High Court judges' posts are lying vacant in the country,” K. Elango, State general secretary of AILU, said. The lawyers repeated their plea for the creation of Supreme Court bench in South India to ease the difficulties being faced by the litigant public from the region who prefer to file appeals in the apex court. G. Chamki Raj, State vice-president of AILU, called for speedy setting up of Principal District Judge's Court for the newly-formed Tirupur district.
