Pune: The Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) has decided to offer the college preparatory programme in Urdu and Hindi along with English and Marathi programmes, according to a spokesperson of the university. The university has been offering the preparatory programme to those who fail in the 10th and 12th examinations, thereby opening their way to graduation. It will launch its B.A. course in Urdu soon. The Government of Maharashtra passed a resolution on May 20 stating that those who passed the 1st year B.A. or B.Com. of the open university (through the preparatory course i.e. without passing the class 12th examination) would be eligible to apply for any government job wherever standard 12 was the basic qualification. To ensure that this facility was made available to the minority communities too, the university decided to offer the course through Urdu and Hindi. Each year, at least 17,000 students appear for class 10th examination from about 2,000 Urdu medium schools in the State. Academics from universities have been roped in for formulating the syllabi and writing books in Urdu and Hindi.
