Protests against fuel price hike

Staff Correspondent

Opposition: Members of the district unit of Jaya Karnataka cooking on the road in protest against the fuel price hike in Raichur on Monday.

RAICHUR: Members of the district units of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Coolie Sangha (KPRCS), and Jaya Karnataka took out separate processions and staged protests here on Monday against the hike in prices of kerosene, diesel and cooking gas.

Activists led by Nityananda Swamy, president of the State unit of KPCRS, and Kariyappa Acholli, secretary of the district unit of CPI (M), staged dharnas at the Ambedkar Circle. They raised slogans against the “anti-people” policies of the United Progressive Alliance Government. Jaya Karnataka activists, led by its district unit president S. Shivakumar Yadav, took out a procession from Baswaeshwara Circle.

Later, they went to the office of the Deputy Commissioner and submitted a memorandum to the district administration.

They said the fuel price hike affect the life of the common man and demanded that it be withdrawn.

Left cooks

Bidar Staff Correspondent reports:

Left parties protested against the increase in the prices of LPG, diesel and kerosene by cooking on the streets using firewood, here on Monday.

Protesters took out a rally through the main streets of the city shouting slogans against the UPA Government. They gathered near Ambedkar Circle and cooked food, which they distributed to around 50 persons, and dispersed.

“The UPA Government came to power by promising to serve the common man. But now it has made his life miserable. We must all protest against this [hike],” CPI district secretary Baburao Honna said.0

He alleged that the Central and State governments had imposed taxes on pet products as they could not collect them from other sources. “This exposes the inefficient tax collection system both at the Centre and the State,” he said.

Baburao Wadekar said it was strange that the UPA Government which spoke of controlling inflation was, in fact, contributing to it by increasing the fuel prices.

“It is a pity that economists and bureaucrats in the Government were blind to the fact that an increase in fuel prices will lead to increase in prices of food and other essential commodities. When the man on the streets can understand this, why can't the people in powerful places understand such this simple truth?” Mr. Wadekar said.
