KOLLAM: Demanding that the State government revoke the decision to grant no-objection certificates to new CBSE and ICSE schools, All India Youth Front activists took out a march to the District Collectorate and staged a dharna there on Monday.

They said the public education system should be protected, and demanded that the government drop the measures aimed at helping the managements of self- financing colleges.

The march began from M.N. Smarakam at Chinnakada and passed through the Taluk Office junction. In front of the Collectorate, a strong police cordon blocked the protesters from entering the complex. In the ensuing tussle, the activists hurled stones, injuring an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, Siva Prasad, from the Anchalummoodu police station.

Inaugurating the dharna, K. Prakash Babu, district unit secretary of the Communist Party of India, alleged huge corruption behind the move to grant the no-objection certificates, and said it would ruin the public education sector.

He said the government was creating the right atmosphere for the self-financing college managements to gain freedom for admissions to all seats in their institutions. The government was yielding to the demands of the Inter-Church Council, which, he alleged, was engaged in open commercialisation of the education sector.

Raju D. Poothakulam, AIYF State committee member, presided over the dharna. G. Udayakumar, AIYF State joint secretary, the district-level leaders R. Sajilal and E.K. Sudhir, and the CPI leader Sam K. Daniel spoke.
