Kozhikode
Kozhikode: Several arterial roads in the city, including State highways and other roads under the Public Works Department, are in a bad condition. Potholes have developed on most roads. The pre-monsoon patch work carried out has not helped, and even pedestrians are facing a tough time. The stretch from Karaparamba to Karikkamkulam on the State Highway that leads to Balussery is dilapidated. Local people blame the Kerala Water Authority for the potholes on the stretch. The workers dig the roads to repair leaky pipes and leave them in that state. The stretch in front of the Government Homeopathic Medical College and at Krishnan Nair Road junction is full of potholes. The condition of Florican Road starting from Karikkamkulam to Malaparamba is no better. Here too, the residents criticise the water authority for alleged failure to restore the roads after digging it for repairing burst water pipes. Adding to the woes of the residents is the work on the Malaparamba-Vengalam bypass across Florican Road. Florican Hill Road happens to be a major road in the northern part of the city. The 2.5-km road runs parallel to the Kozhikode-Wayanad road (National Highway 212 stretch) from Karikkamkulam to Malaparamba. Vehicles from East Hill, West Hill, Thadambattuthazham, Balussery, and Narikunni in the district and from the northern part of Kerala rely on this road to reach the Government Medical College, several private hospitals at Malaparamba, and the District Collectorate. Several educational institutions, such as Providence Women's College, Veda Vyasa School, and the women's polytechnic, are on Florican Hill Road. Besides, students of Silver Hills Public School, Silver Hills Higher Secondary School, St. Joseph's College, and Devagiri Public School are regular users of the road. Vehicles proceeding to Thrissur and to the Karipur airport proceed along Florican Road to the Malaparamba-Ramanattukara bypass. The East Hill-Chakkorathukulam road is in a bad condition. The construction of a drain that started here a year ago is incomplete. Broken slabs and debris have been left on the either side of the road. A single shower can flood the road leading to East Hill. The drains on one side of the road have not been de-silted. Students of Kendriya Vidyalaya rely on the road.
