University staff protest against transfer

MALAPPURAM: Employees of Calicut University owing allegiance to the CPI(M) blockaded the university administrative block and gheraoed Registrar P.P. Mohammed on Monday in protest against a recent inter-departmental transfer of 18 employees.

The protesters claimed that the transfer was illegal while the authorities maintained that it was routine.

The protest led to tension on the campus as police confronted the employees. The police removed the protesters from the Registrar's chamber. As many as 24 protesters were arrested.

The employees under the banner of the Calicut University Employees Union took out a march to the police station.

The protesters said they would continue the agitation.
