State to form real estate regulatory authority

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State government is planning to set up a State real estate regulatory authority for monitoring the construction and funding of flats, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Monday.

Replying to questions in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said the proposal for floating the authority, similar to the one in Haryana, had been made following complaints against construction companies. Legal action had been taken against 48 companies so far.

The cases registered in connection with network marketing and money chains had been handed over to the Crime Branch. An Additional Director-General of Police would monitor the inquiry. The government had asked the Reserve Bank of India to freeze the accounts of companies involved in illegal deals.

He said the government would pilot legislation, if needed, to prevent such scams. Action had been taken against a jewellery group which had been running a money-chain model business.

The Chief Minister said that except in the palmolein case, the government had not ordered a reinvestigation into any case in which charge sheets had been filed at the Vigilance court. The reinvestigation into the palmolein case had been decided on the basis of the court direction.

He said the government was seriously planning to make changes in the retirement unification scheme implemented by the previous government. The government would write to the Centre for changing the judicial members of the State Administrative Tribunal who had been nominated during the tenure of the previous Left Democratic Front government. The government had decided to invite fresh applications on that score.
